Intermediate Motivational Interviewing Training

 

This hands-on interactive online training is intended for those who have already had some exposure, through an introductory training to the basic principles and skills of MI, and those who ideally have had some practice in the implementation of the skills in their client conversations.

 

This training will focus on fostering more advanced levels of practice, so participants can expect less didactic and instead more hands-on training activities such as demonstrations, small group practice with in-vivo coaching by the trainers, evaluation of practice audio or videotapes, and further exposure to coding and supervisory skills.

Access the training and material from the comfort of your home or office! This training will be taught 100% online and can be accessed with your personal computer or mobile device. As this training will be highly dynamic with a lot of opportunity to practice, participants will be required to use video camera and microphone.

What is Motivational Interviewing (MI)

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, goal-oriented method of communication with attention to the language of change. It is designed to strengthen an individual's personal motivation for a movement toward a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person's own arguments for change.

Who should attend?

This training is designed for anyone who wishes to advance their MI skills in supporting people who are considering making a behavior change. The evidence-based behind MI has become increasingly strong in the last decades, expanding into practically any field in which a person in considering making a behavior change. This training is appropriate for helping professionals who are working with clients to make physical, mental, and other positive health behavior changes: educators, physicians, health educators, life coaches, mental health providers, corrections officers, dentists, social workers, dieticians, care managers, nurses, consultants, community workers, peer recovery coaches, etc.

About the Trainer(s)

Yadira Benjelloun is MINT-Certified Trainer of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and founder and MI consultant of the Compassionate Ear. Yadira holds an MS in Educational Counseling and works as Spanish bilingual Senior Learning Consultant/Trainer for Southern California Kaiser Permanente. She designs and delivers trainings for clinicians and physicians across Southern California. Her caring and genuine training style provides a safe space to promote an inclusive and supportive learning environment to all participants.

Patricia Juarez has a Master’s in Clinical Psychology and is the Trainer Director of a Research & Training Center, at the Psychology Department, at the University of Texas at El Paso, where she designs and offers bilingual training and supervision in Motivational Interviewing (MI), Brief Motivational Interventions (BMI) and Culturally-Centered BMI. She is a Certified Trainer by, and member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT). She has facilitated trainings with professionals and providers in health, behavioral health, legal and educational settings; primarily addressing alcohol and substance use, other health and behavioral health related behaviors, as well as medication, program and treatment compliance. She also teaches at the Psychology Department of the Autonomous University of Juarez, in Juarez, México, which has provided her with the opportunity to work with Latino populations in both sides of this unique U.S.-Mexico border.

Reyna Puentes is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and works as a Licensed Professional Counselor-Associate in a non-profit mental health counseling center in El Paso, Texas. She also works in the Department of Psychology within the University of Texas at El Paso, where she develops and provides Motivational Interviewing training in English and Spanish to organizations, including peer support recovery services, family and protective services, juvenile and adult probation, community mental and health care service workers, and more. She is experienced in coding and providing feedback and supervision in MI and brings an energetic and passionate spirit to MI trainings.

Training Objectives:

• Participants will deepen practice in setting collaborative and empathic interactions by incorporating the 4 elements of the MI Spirit: Partnership, Acceptance, Compassion and Evocation

• Participants will continue to practice the use the 4 MI Processes as a framework for guiding tailored interactions with sequential and recursive steps

• Especial emphasis will be given to reinforce participant’s abilities and confidence for the strategic use core skills, OARS (Open-ended questions, Affirmations, Reflections, Summaries) to elicit and strengthen both types of Change Talk

• Participants will practice in-vivo coaching on how to guide client conversations in a way that clients clarify and give voice to a stronger foundation of Preparatory Change Talk (i.e. the Why of change).

• Participants will reinforce the recognition of clients’ readiness to progress into the Planning process, by recognizing and helping clients verbalize Mobilizing Change Talk (i.e. the How of change), and thus guide them to envision realistic ways towards implementing change strategies, including the exploration of outside resources, hope, confidence and commitment.

• Participants will reinforce and practice MI-consistent ways to exchange information, to facilitate collaborative exploration and open consideration of behavior change.

• Participants will practice the MI Skills and Spirit to recognize and respond strategically and more productively to more challenging client scenarios in which clients may be less ready and/or willing to change (i.e., Soften Sustain Talk and/or Discord)

• 8 hours of training

• One week prior to the training, participants will be emailed the ZOOM link, as well as a link to access the training slides and handouts.

• Certificate of Completion will be emailed within a week of the completion of training.
