Essentials of MI for Busy Healthcare Providers

Do you struggle with how to handle patients who clearly need to make a change but don't see the need?

Do you find that your efforts to persuade patients regarding what they need or should be doing for their health is ineffective? ...that your warning of negative consequences doesn't seem to be enough to convince them to take your advice?

Does it feel like patients tell you that they are going to make a change but don't end up taking those first steps? Or they make an attempt only to give up soon after?

What if you could be more effective in your approach with patients in the short amount of time you have with them?

How would it feel to start hearing your patients coming up with their own ideas for making change?

What would it be like to significantly improve positive patient outcomes?...to increase patient compliance?

 This course will help you...

  • Improve patient outcomes and compliance with care (evidence-based practice).

  • Feel more effective and fulfilled in your work.

  • Empower patients to take on the responsibility for making and maintaining change.

  • See positive patient results faster.

  • Feel more effective working with "resistant" or "challenging" patients.

Motivational Interviewing is a proven method for increasing your patients' likelihood of making positive change. It is a collaborative and empowering approach to help patients alter their behaviors and better manage their illness. Over 200 clinical trials support this evidence-based treatment. It is applicable to a wide variety of problems encountered in health care settings, from encouraging compliance with medication to specific work on health behaviors and has been shown to be more effective than a more traditional approach of advice-giving or persuasion.

Through lecture, role play, video content, and discussion, you will learn how to successfully help your patients make steps toward achieving long-term goals. You will leave with a new set of communication skills and knowledge of a proven effective approach to working with your patients.

Course Objectives:

  • Describe the three types of communication styles

  • Explore integration of the MI spirit into practice: compassion, autonomy, evoking, & collaboration

  • Practice OARS communication skills  (open-ended questions, affirmations, reflections, summaries)

  • Describe the 4 processes of MI (Engagement, Focusing, Evoking, Planning)

  • Discuss change talk vs sustain talk

  • Discuss ways to work more effectively with "non-compliant"/"resistant" patients.

This course will introduce you to the main spirit and skills of Motivational Interviewing. It will provide to you a proven method for increasing the likelihood of behavior change in your patients and help you feel more fulfilled with the work that you do.
