Facilitator-Led Online Intermediate

Intermediate Skills Lab

So... you have taken basic training in Motivational Interviewing, but feel like you aren’t yet fluent in MI?

This course is all about SKILLS PRACTICE. (Hence, the title, Skills Lab). Experiential education, ya’ll! We learn best by doing! A significant amount of each session will be spent in actually doing or observing skills practice. You’re gonna complete this course with more confidence in your ability to ‘speak MI!’

In this 5-week (10 hour) series that meets Tuesdays 9a-11a EST from 11/17-12/15, we are going to dive into PRACTICE. You will complete this course feeling more fluid in utilizing OARS skills throughout the 4 Processes of MI. Each session is LIVE VIRTUAL, with a mix of presentation, practice, videos & audio samples and Q&A via Zoom platform. All weekly sessions are recorded for your viewing, and available to be viewed prior to the next session (so don’t worry if you miss a week!).

  • Week 1: Are you ready to get real with your MI skills?!  We will start with a super-fast review of MI, & watch some “MI in action.” Then, we will jump into OARS skills practice within the first process of MI, Engagement.

  • Week 2: OARS Boot Camp! Rowing with OARS continues! How do we consolidate and guide conversation using OARS around specific change goals? In this session, we will continue OARS skills practice in the second process of MI, Focusing.

  • Week 3: Rowing with OARS and EARS? Wait, I was finally getting OARS when you threw in a new acronym. EARS? “E” stands for elaboration, which is surely what we want to do when we are hanging out in the third process of MI, Evoking. We want to camp out and help people connect more deeply to their own personal change talk. More opportunities for practice, practice, practice!

  • Week 4: Effective use of OARS with change planning. So when a client FINALLY has enough fuel for change, it’s time to transition to the Planning process in MI. How do we create an effective change plan? We will continue to hone our OARS practice as we dial into the fourth process of MI, Planning. You’ll have a chance to both guide and be on the receiving end of creating a MI change plan in this session!

  • Week 5: Rubber Meets the Road! Guess what?! More OARS practice! I said this was a skills lab, right?! We’ll view another sample of Motivational Interviewing in action, as well as have a chance for course wrap up and goal setting! Congratulations, you are more fluent in MI!
