Abstract

(from the chapter) In addition to discussing the unique issues related to providing supervision for those treating substance use disorders, we present an approach to providing supervision in this and other settings based on the principles of motivational interviewing (MI), an active, directive approach to exploring and resolving ambivalence related to behavior change (Miller & Rollnick, 2002). It is our stance that the founding principles of MI are highly applicable to clinical supervision and translate well to the various roles of a clinical supervisor.
